The subject chosen this year by Gerardo Mosquera for PhotoEspaña is “Interfaces: Portrait and Communication”. This leit- motif is the exploration of faces as a way of expressing oneself and interacting.

PhotoEspaña is made up of 78 exhibitions featu- ring works by 370 photographers and more than 60 activities related to photography. Within the official section, several shows are worth highlighting, including the one organi- sed by the National Archaeological Museum entitled “Portraits of Fayu”. For the first time in the history of the event, non-photographic works will be displayed. These are the earliest portraits in history to have reached out times, and they were found over the faces of the de- ceased from ancient Egypt between the 1st and 2nd centuries. The National Archaeologi- cal Museum is joining PhotoEspaña for the first time with this collection of portraits.

PHE will also feature several collective shows, such as “Face Contact”, which brings together the works of 31 artists at the Teatro Fernán Gó- mez, and “The Power of Doubt” at the Fun- dación Ico, an innovative show that includes photographs, videos and installations.

At Sala Alcala 31 we are offering the exhibition entitled “100 Faces/ 0 Faces/ 1 Face”. Accor- ding to Gerardo Mosquera, it is portraiture as seen through the eyes of Cindy Sherman. (1954), Thomas Ruff (1958) and Frank Monte- ro Collado. At Casa de América we are ex- hibiting the photographs by Carlos Endara (1867-1954), the first time they are being dis- played outside his native Panama. The exhi- bition “Facing Time” will be on display at the Royal Botanical Garden. Esther Ferrer, Péter Forgács, Pere Formiguera, Kan Xuan and Lu- cas Samaras, artists from diverse generations and provenances, ponder ages and ageing, physical evolution and the cycles of life. In addition to the official section, this year’s edi- tion of PhotoEspaña also features exhibitions in more than 30 specialised galleries, along with photography workshops that renowned photographers will teach at the PHE Campus in the Antiguo Hospital de Santa María la Rica in Alcalá de Henares. The guest photogra- pher-lecturers include Oliviero Toscani, Javier Vallhonrat, Ernesto Bazán and Ouka Leele.
